Apple Martini
The apple martini, otherwise known as the appletini, exploded on the mixologist scene in the late 1990s. It quickly replaced the Cosmopolitan as a favorite cocktail amongst women. Popular television shows and movies further commercialized this sweet and aromatic concoction, and in no time at all every upscale bar in Manhattan to Los Angeles was stirring up apple martinis and selling them for 12 dollars a pop.The apple martini is nothing like a classic martini. It is a sweet and sticky cocktail, and it does not have that dry, sharp bite that a customary gin martini has. It is the sweet flavor that is most appealing to women, as well as the fact that the alcohol is particular well masked by the apple aroma. For this reason it must be noted that the appletini, although sweet and incredibly flavorful, can pack and unexpected punch. It is a saccharine and candyish drink that goes down awfully easy.
There are several variations of the appletini. However, the foundation of the cocktail remains the same. A good appletini begins with high-quality vodka. After that, it is up to the barkeep. Apple juice, cider, liqueur or even apple brandy are then added to the drink. Feeling nostalgic for the original martini, some bartenders will even put in a splash of vermouth.
The apple martini remains popular today. Unlike other cocktails, the drink survived its initial fad stage and is now a staple on any drink menu across the country. It is a cocktail that still caters to women, but even the most rugged man is prone to order an appletini, especially if he is drinking with his wife.
